BJJ Globetrotters - Interview

BSP Date: August 31, 2015

What is the name of your brand(s)?

BJJ Globetrotters

When & where was it founded, and where is it currently headquartered?

Founded late 2012 and HQ is primarily where ever my brain and laptop are located, but in terms of physical location, we are storing some stuff in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Who are the founders/current owners?

Christian Graugart

Is there any significance behind the name of the brand or its logo?

Hm not really. I just wanted something that wasn't all bulldogs and skulls. And I love the old VW vans, so I thought that was a fun little different thing to do.

What was the driving force (or forces) behind the founding of the brand?

It was completely by chance, I never planned to build a brand or a business. It just started with a fun logo, some patches and then slowly evolved from there on it's own. I feel like I'm pretty much just sitting on the sideline observing it grow and nursing it a little bit, feeding it good karma.

What are your strengths / the strengths of your brand?

Not sure, really :)

What was your first product produced (prototype or otherwise)?

I guess the first was our patches. I originally just made them for me and my friends who were going to the Europeans but suddenly people from all over asked me if they could get one. So it's not like I planned to start a brand and designed some product to launch it.

In that first year or so, what were your first struggles in getting the brand off the ground?

I never worry/worried about trying to build it up or sell stuff, so there has been no struggle. Every product I've designed, I've done because I wanted one for myself. That other people also turned out to like it and wanted to pay for it was just a bonus. I still don't really focus on making money or building a business, but more on doing interesting stuff for myself and inviting other people along. For instance, I love to travel, so I come up with ideas of the most interesting trips I could possibly imagine doing and then see if someone else wanna go along for a training camp. So far it's been working pretty well.

What would you consider to be your signature or keystone item(s) to date?

I guess it would be the travel gi. My first gi project was the full rashguard lining Sunset gi, which I produced because I thought it looked amazing. They were heavy and expensive to produce and ship though and with the whole travel theme of BJJ Globetrotters, it just made sense to do super light weight gis. Kauai Kimonos and other brands made them way before I did so I wouldn't really say it's a "signature" product in that sense. I still love and train with my Kauai Kimonos gi - they're the best hand made rip stop gis out there.

What items do you also sell that people may not be aware of?

I just produced flip flops and microfiber travel towels because I always throw away my own. Not sure many people know about those products, but at least I'll have a life time supply of them for myself then.

Do you have anything exciting coming up in the next few months or so that you can share with us?

We're releasing a brown edition of the travel gi. I have a prototype that I think is absolutely beautiful and I can't wait to train in it at our Summer Camp in Belgium next week.

Geographically speaking, where is your primary customer base?

I sell to pretty much all areas of the world. Mostly North America, Europe, Asia and Australia. I guess that's where Jiu Jitsu is most wide spread.

A common question/concern among our members is the issue of shipping. We have found that some brands will not ship worldwide or have carved out certain countries from their territory. So if you would, please explain your shipping policy, pricing and any geographic restrictions that you have with regard to the sale of your goods.

We ship for free to any country in the world, no restrictions. With a travel themed Jiu Jitsu brand, I don't think it would make sense to not treat every customer equal no matter where in the world they might find themselves. Needless to say, we make less - or even lose - money on a sale if we need to ship it to a South American rainforest or the middle of Russia, but our business is being built on a foundation of good karma, not profit, so that's where our focus is. If you're out there traveling and need our gear, we'd happily take a little hit in return of supporting your adventure.

Do you have any sponsored athletes? If so, do you have specific criteria for selecting such athletes?

We have no sponsored athletes, but we do have a bunch of sponsored travelers. The criteria are not really defined, but I guess you need to be on some sort of epic, ambitious adventure and spread a lot of good vibes in the academies you visit.

Where do you get the inspiration from in designing new gear for your brand?

Mostly from traveling to exotic places, I think.

What differentiates you and your brand from other BJJ brands?

Don't really know much about other brands, so I'm not sure.

What other brands are out there that you admire? And why?

Again, not really into the "scene" and don't buy/own a lot of gear, so I couldn't say.

Is your company direct sales only? Or do you have distributors?

A few small distributors, but haven't really explored that option  much yet, so we just sell from our own website.

Do or have you participated in tournament booths or sponsorships of tournaments?

No, since we do only 100% IBJJF illegal gear and our whole vibe is more about traveling than winning, I haven't really found that to be relevant. But might set up a booth at a competition one day if it's in a cool place to visit.

Any plans for future expansion?

No grand plans, just enjoying the ride.

Please tell us a little about yourself, where you grew up, your BJJ experience, home life, education, military service, etc. Anything that might help our members get to know you a little better.

Grew up in a suburb to Copenhagen, Denmark. Started training Taekwondo at age of six, did well in school but had too many ideas to keep studying after (Danish equivalent of) high school. Dodged military service so I could learn computer programming. Live in Copenhagen with my girlfriend and our two year old son, who we are planning to have set foot on all continents before he starts (formal) school.

I ran a martial arts academy since 2003 but recently sold my share in it. Have been focusing for a long time on breaking free of the monthly cycle of paycheck and bills. Through years of heavy downsizing, frugality, saving and investing, I am now at a point where I don't really need to worry about having a job. It's a nice feeling.

What hobbies do you enjoy?

Apart from my main interest of making ideas come to life, I enjoy reading, writing, surfing (just a few times a year when traveling though), longboarding, programming, cooking, not spending money, etc.

Do you have any pets?

This question is terrible timing, I have had a wonderful cat for 16 years but he is getting euthanized tomorrow. I'm gonna miss him.

Where did you grow up and attend school (University/College)?

Grew up and went to school in and around Copenhagen, Denmark.

Tell us a little about your background in martial arts/grappling.

Started Taekwondo at six, tried Jeet Kune Do around 17 which was some sort of Kung Fu that eventually evolved into some sort of MMA, then into actual MMA. The grappling aspect was always my favorite and I think that most people - like me - get tired of getting punched in the face every day, so Jiu Jitsu is a way to keep training at a competitive level without the headaches.

Quick Fire

These questions are designed to allow for short, one or two word answers. Oftentimes just yes or no, and from a personal perspective.

Rash Guard – Short or long sleeve?

Short. My guns are swole.

Preferred gi colorway?

Gray

Rash under your gi?

No

Spats under your gi?

No!

Gi Pants – Rip Stop, Cotton Twill/Drill Cotton, or Cotton/Poly Blend?

No preference

Gi jacket weave?

Ripstop / pearl weave

First gi you owned?

I think it was an old Judo gi. I decorated it with some nice patches from cutting out t-shirts with cats and bungee jumping.

Anything that looks cool

Last stamp on your passport?

El Salvador, I think? Travel in Europe all the time but get no stamps for it. Such a disappointment.

Beer or wine?

Both

Tea or coffee?

None

Do you wash your belt or not?

WASH!

Regular knot or superlock knot in belt?

Not even sure what those are, I haven't changed my knot since the one I learned when I started Taekwondo in 1988.

Isle or window seat?

Window

As a component to BJJ New Gear's questionnaire that nearly 200 of you completed for BJJ Globetrotters, many of you took the opportunity to ask questions of Christian. Well, as promised here are most of those questions and his answers. Enjoy.

Oh, by the way...we've taken out duplicate questions and any that were inappropriate.

Any advice on finding a gym when traveling.

Use the BJJ Globetrotters community, it is build for the same :) Tons of affiliated academies and members around the world who welcomes travelers, just check our website

www.BJJglobetrotters.com. Our Facebook group is also very active in helping people find places to train on the road: https://www.facebook.com/groups/757904750904200/

Any camp in Asia someday?

Don't know :)

Any plan to come to Sweden?

Yes, I'm teaching a seminar in Östersund next month.

Any thoughts on a female line of gear? Sometimes it is hard to get a perfect fit with universal.

Maybe down the road, but with all the sizes and colors we would need to stock, it is primarily a question of not having enough physical room for it at the moment

Are you a bjj fighter?

Not sure haha :D

Are your trips BJJ on beach overseas family friendly or do they tend to be for adults?

Our camps are primarily for adults. The big ones in Europe, we have a few teens participating but that's about it.

Can i please come stay with you Christian and train the time? i will sleep on the mats. Anything for jiu jitsu!

Anytime, just come by :) Not possible to sleep on the mats though, since our academy is in a public sports center that closes at night. Visitors always train for free at my place.

Can I run away from home to travel with you?

Sure, just shoot me an email ;)

Do they have any black Sunset gi in A3?

Sold out and we won't make any more unfortunately.

Do you feel jiu-jitsu is getting softer as it becomes more sport and less about the fight?

I don't know and I don't care, I just roll :)

Do you feel that the steep prices in IBJJF tournaments should be reduced for competitors and fees removed for schools so the students can accurately represent their academies?

IBJJF is a privately owned business so I don't think they can be demanded by the public to change anything. It's supply and demand. If people pay for it, they will keep doing it. So if you don't like it, you should support other competitions instead. Or maybe even start your own :)

Do you have a store front anywhere?

No

Do you have any advice for a small group Bjj club just starting out?

Keep an open mind, train with as many different people as possible, travel, compete and focus on expanding your community. As for building a business (or anything, really), I personally base it on two things only: Treat every single person walking through the door as a potential new best friend and always try to give people 10% more than they expect.

Do you have plans on adding more products to your shop?

Not really, but maybe I come up with something cool, who knows

Do you sponsor mma/bjj fighters and how can I be part of it?

No, we only sponsor travelers.

Favorite choke?

Anything that makes the opponent tap

Favorite gym of all time to train at?

Not really a gym, but I love to train at our Beach Camp in El Salvador. Most beautiful matspace I know.

Favorite jiu jitsu item? Specific Rash guard? Maybe shirt? Tape?

Not really :)

Favorite pre-comp meal what is it?

Food. I hate cutting weight.

Gi or no Gi?

Both

Had an amazing time at the summer-camp in leuven.. even if i know the answer... did you christian ? ;-)

It was the worst week of my life hahaha ;)

Have you gotten much grief from the BJJ "establishment?"

No, actually not :)

Hints for big guys?

CRUUUUUUSH

How about adding a high quality back pack to the lineup?

I've considered it, but I think there is too much research and work in making it a quality I could accept. Also, they would take up a ton of space that I don't have and I'm not sure my mum wants any more stuff in her garage.

How can I travel more to train, not just to big locations like São Paulo but domestically in the U.S. and also Europe?

www.BJJglobetrotters.com and https://www.facebook.com/groups/757904750904200/ is your new best friend

How can someone globetrott if they are the bread winner in a family of 6?

They chose a different path of life and it's a long way to change it at that point, I can imagine. It's about priorities.

How do you pick the spots for the seminars, and is Hawaii on the list?

I spend a lot of time doing research and visiting places. Hawaii is in my notes but I'm pretty sure it will be logistically too difficult.

How do you plan on bettering the bjj community as a whole?

I don't really plan that. But I guess that building and expanding the BJJ Globetrotters idea and vibe, will hopefully infuse a bit of good karma to the BJJ community as a whole. It's my little addition to BJJ and if it can make just one person a bit happier, then it's all worth it.

How does your company plan to expand the world of Jiu Jitsu?

No plans really.

How to contact members in another country?

Just find the members list on www.BJJglobetrotters.com and shoot us a message requesting contact details :)

How would you suggest someone can learn and keep their edge for bjj if they struggle to find people to train with?

I guess they would have to put their primary focus on finding people to train with.

I'd like to know more about the non-gear aspects of becoming involved with BJJ Globetrotter and their travel/jits programs.

That was a pretty broad questions that I'm not sure exactly how to answer. Did you check out our website www.BJJglobetrotters.com? :)

Keenan Cornelius or Travis Stephens - in a submission only Match who wins?

I have zero clue, don't really follow Jiu Jitsu.

What country have you been to that you recommend any BJJ player make sure they go to?

Can't answer that, it completely depends on what you want to do with your Jiu Jitsu. Some train to be the best in the world, some use it to travel, some use it to socialize / get in shape etc. So your dream destination is completely depending on that.

What do you consider when sponsoring athletes?

We sponsor travelers who are on epic adventures and spread good vibes. Those are the main criterias.

What do you enjoy most about what you do?

All of it.

What gave you the inspiration to call it "globetrotters?" how does that relate to fake basketball games?

It kind of spun off from a round the world BJJ trip I did in 2011 where I wrote a blog called "BJJ globetrotter"

What hair product does Christian recommend?

Great question! Moroccanoil curl cream is the magic stuff

What information would you give a person wanting to travel and roll?

Buy a plane ticket, pack your gi, go.

What is coming next on your marketing plan? New stuff? Book/Gis?

Not sure, I just kind of go with the flow and see what comes up

What is the worst experience a member has had training while away? We don't need a gym name!

Haven't really heard of anything actually

What is your secret new product in development? If you have one...

It's a secret

What motivates you to keep going?

I train, travel and make new friends all the time. Don't really need more motivation than that :)

What started you off in BJJ?

1999 with Chris Haueter's VHS tapes

What was, for you, the most rewarding part of starting the Globetrotters?

To build something that can make a lot of people smile.

What would you recommend for a lightweight travel gi? Not too flashy.

We have a white, basic model that should do the trick

What's the quality of the gi?

Not sure exactly what you would want me to answer here :D

When are you coming back to Pennsylvania or the east coast I know I just missed the US camp?

Plan on doing the New Hampshire camp again next summer, working on the dates and details now.

When are you coming to a London bjj school?

Eventually, I guess. Have many friends over there, so sooner or later I'll probably show up :)

When are you going to come visit Paul Sharp and I at our gym near Chicago?

I love Paul! Would love to come over.

When are you going to do a bjj camp in Poland?! :)

Not sure, do you have mats for 200 people? :)

When are you going to do a camp in the UK?!?

Might be sooner than you think...

When did you decide to start traveling and why no affiliation what was the motivation to do this?

When we started BJJ here, there were no one to teach us, so it just became a natural thing to travel. Also pretty quickly became obvious that affiliation is nothing but a business relationship which is not necessary at all in order to learn a sport or have a network in it.

When is team FAL getting back together again?

hahaha

When is the first BJJ Globetrotter's full moon all night trance open mat happening ?

Every full moon, did you miss it?!?!

When is the next world tour, Christian?

I'm kind of master planning it for my life, but I'm not in a hurry really. I want my son to be a bit older before we leave, so he can get most out of it.

When is your next rash guard drop?

Soon!

When you doing your next camp?

Three camps coming up in December, January and February. Check www.BJJglobetrotters.com/camps

When will you be bring Globetrotter training and luggage bags out?

Same question again! Now I might have to make it :D

Where did you get your inspiration for your dope sunset gi?

Not sure, just kind of came up with it

Where is the one place you've been that the bjj community surprised you the most?

Planet earth

Why can't anyone make a decent bjj gear bag like they have for triathlon?

Ok, this is it... I'm off to the drawing board.

Why did you decide to start your own team? I know it's to avoid politics, but that always happens anyways. What are you going to do to make the politics of jiu jitsu non-existent?

You answered it, politics will always happen as it is human nature. I never really decided to start my own team and I don't consider Globetrotters to be a team. It's just a community of people who agree on a certain view on things.

Why did you pick a VW bus on your patch?

There were zero arguments against it, that bus is dope.

Why don't you make gear for the larger players? All I see are gis sized A5 and lower, why don't you make gis A6+?

Because there is not much of a market for it. Send me an email and I'll make you a custom size gi.

Why is shipping so expensive to Ireland compared to UK?

Is it? We have free shipping to everywhere in the world.

Will there be any collaborations with other brands?

No plans, but who knows :)

Will there ever be a long-term (months) camp?

I don't think so

Will there ever be a UK camp?

That question again! :D

Will you be having a bjj camp close to Arizona anytime soon, my girlfriend and I would love to do a bjj camp with the BJJ Globetrotters?

Don't think so, but you can always jump on a plane and come anyways :)

Will you make a hemp gi at some point?

No :)

Will you make a seminar or camp over South America?

If the right opportunity presents it self :)

Will you sponsor me please ?

Are you traveling the world right now?

Would you consider doing a camp in the UK?

.... ;)

Rolljunkie - Interview

BSP Date: August 24, 2015

Q: What is the name of your brand?

Rolljunkie

Q: When & where was it founded, and where is it currently headquartered?

Rolljunkie was founded in 2012. We are based out of New Jersey.

Q: Who are the founders/current owners?

Brothers - Ed and Matt Eaton

Q: Is there any significance behind the name of the brand or its logo?

We chose the name Rolljunkie because we felt it represents how a lot of people feel about jiujitsu. Those that are passionate about BJJ just can’t get enough of it. They love to roll just like we do!

Q: What was the driving force (or forces) behind the founding of the brand?

We wanted to build a BJJ brand with a new and unique style for people who love to train like we do. We had a lot of ideas for different designs so we decided to try a few out and then the brand just grew from there.

Q: What are your strengths / the strengths of your brand?

We feel our creativity is one of our biggest strengths. We’re willing to try new things with our designs and products. Some examples include our cauliflower ear design, military inspired rank patches, and the psycho rashguard. Our interactive BJJ black belt lineage tree on our website is another example of our creativity in action.

In addition, we are always striving to make customer service one of our strengths. We do everything we can to ensure they are happy with our products. We try to go the extra mile for our customers by offering free shipping on all orders in the US, shipping a free sticker with every order, and offering regular discounts and sales. Mailing list subscribers also receive exclusive discount offers.

Q: What was your first product produced (prototype or otherwise)?

We started out simple with a handful of t-shirt designs and since then our product line and quality has been constantly evolving. We are always looking for ways to make our products better and you can tell the difference when you compare our original prototypes from years ago to the products we are making now.

Q: In that first year or so, what were your first struggles in getting the brand off the ground?

In the first year or so, we had several different challenges. We were constantly refining our products to get quality we could be proud of and this presented some manufacturing challenges.

In addition, we had inventory, website, and marketing challenges to work through. We learned a lot from that first year and feel it’s helped us be a better brand in many ways.

Q: What would you consider to be your signature or keystone item(s) to date?

One of our signature items has to be our Stealth fight shorts. Normally, we like to bring in fresh designs with new batches whenever possible, however the Stealth shorts have been so popular we just keep bringing them back without changing anything. We feel they are great quality and the clean black design of the shorts never goes out of style.

Q: What items do you also sell that people may not be aware of?

Not everyone is aware we release different BJJ accessories regularly. We have offered accessories including hats, kimono patches, cell phone cases, and other items over the years.

Right now we have some great new patches to add some Rolljunkie style to your gi.

Q: Do you have anything exciting coming up in the next few months or so that you can share with us?

Yes, we have new Comp II fight shorts due out later this month. These are white shorts with embroidered logos built with the same quality as our Stealth shorts. (We have attached an exclusive preview pic to share with the group)

Q: Geographically speaking, where is your primary customer base?

Our largest customer base is out of NJ, but we also have customers all over the US and the world!

Q: A common question/concern among our members is the issue of shipping. We have found that some brands will not ship worldwide or have carved out certain countries from their territory. So if you would, please explain your shipping policy, pricing and any geographic restrictions that you have with regard to the sale of your goods.

We offer free shipping in the US on every order – no minimum order amount.

For international shipping, we ask our customers to email us directly for a quote. We rate check different carriers then provide a custom quote with the best rate. In addition, we try to offer discounts if possible to help keep costs down. We do our best to work with our international customers.

Q: Do you have any sponsored athletes? If so, do you have specific criteria for selecting such athletes?

We have several sponsored athletes. We look for skilled grapplers who are also good people – the kind of people we are proud to have representing our brand. Our sponsored athletes all train hard and have goals in BJJ they are trying to achieve. We do our best to support them and help them reach their goals. They do their best to represent our brand and help get our name out there. We are proud to say that our sponsored athletes are friends as well as sponsors.

We’re lucky to have them.

Q: Where do you get the inspiration from in designing new gear for your brand?

We pull inspiration from all sorts of places including surf and MMA culture, but mostly it’s a lot of experimenting in Illustrator & Photoshop to see what looks good. We have also worked with different graphic designers over the years to get fresh perspectives and styles on our products.

Q: What differentiates you and your brand from other BJJ brands?

Our customer service, our products, our style, and our name. Each one of these items defines Rolljunkie and we take pride in all of them!

Q: What other brands are out there that you admire? And why?

Brands like Under Armour, Nike, and Burton come to mind. They have all have great products, brand recognition, and style. We hope to be able to provide that for the jiu-jitsu world.

Q: Is your company direct sales only? Or do you have distributors?

Currently we have direct sales only, however, we hope to bring on distributors in the near future.

Q: Do or have you participated in tournament booths or sponsorship's of tournaments?

We have setup booths before at a number of different tournaments and events in the NJ area over the years. If you see us at a tournament be sure to stop by the booth and say hello.

Q: Any plans for future expansion?

We hope to expand our product line with more designs and styles each year. We have new shorts on the way this month and new long & short sleeve rashguards due out in early fall.

Q: Please tell us a little about yourself, where you grew up, your BJJ experience, home life, education, military service, etc. Anything that might help our members get to know you a little better.

I got into BJJ after my brother Ed encouraged me to give it a try. After wrestling for many years when I was growing up, BJJ felt like a natural progression and has obviously become a huge part of my life. Ed is currently a Renzo Gracie brown belt at Renzo Gracie Denville and I’m a purple belt at Brunswick BJJ in South Brunswick, NJ. It’s great because we’re close enough that we get to train together sometimes and see how we are improving our games in different ways.

Q: What hobbies do you enjoy?

BJJ is obviously one. Running is another. I also enjoy spending time on graphic design for our products and programming for sites like our black belt lineage tree.

Q: Do you have any pets?

We have two cats. They’re awesome. And if you have ever seen cats wrestle, then you know it looks like they are doing jiu-jitsu. They both have sick guard games.

Q: Where did you grow up and attend school (University/College)?

I grew up in NJ most of my life and went to Rutgers University where I studied Computer Science.

Q: Tell us a little about your background in martial arts/grappling.

I started wrestling at 12 years old and wrestled throughout high school and a little in college. Then, years later I discovered jiu-jitsu and have been doing it ever since. I’m currently a purple belt under Garry Tonon at Brunswick BJJ part of the Ricardo Almeida association. It’s amazing being able to train under such a high level instructor at such a great academy. I can’t say enough great things about our academy and the instructors there.

$11.95 for the 0.5 oz. personal size
$15.95 for the 0.75 oz. stick

Ingredients:

Battle Balm® is a topical analgesic and muscle rub made from the highest quality herbal ingredients. They pride themselves on developing a powerful healing balm with no additives, fillers, preservatives, or artificial ingredients.  If you click here you will open a webpage that contains a detailed list of herbs and reasons why they have been selected for Battle Balm. Also, if you'd like to dig deeper into some of the clinical research on each herb, click the ingredient name on that page.

Summary

After trying Battle Balm's Demon Strength out myself for the last two weeks, and my son Brett has used it off and on for about a month now, I scoured the Battle Balm webpage and found the page entitled, 20 Uses For Battle Balm®...and Still Counting.

Outside of pain relief, I was most impressed to see this used for sinus & congestion (who needs Vicks!), burns, bug bites and cracked heels! There's a few things in that list I'm going to experiment with in the future. That's for sure.

According to the Pain Chart, Original or Extra Strength would be best for chronic pain, but I have to say that the Demon Strength performed wonderful for me.

Brett was very happy with the relief he achieved using Demon Strength as well. Of course, results will vary, but I can only tell you some of the uses that we have tried, and the positive outcome which we received. Our trial experiments with Battle Balm included both the tube and the tin, and they both are conveniently sized and can be easily carried in your gym bag, purse or even a jacket pocket. I think the stick is going to magically make it to my desk drawer at work!

Over the years, having tried numerous over the counter topical pain treatments, Battle Balm is definitely a ray of organic, herbal sunshine among a sea of chemical options.

Initial Observations

I was given the opportunity to try out  and review Battle Balm Demon Strength. I was supplied with both  the 2.0 oz. tin and the 0.75 oz stick. These products were used by both myself and Brett; with Brett being the Jiu Jitsu and Muay Thai practitioner. After reading the list of ingredients, I was prepared for a strong yet pleasant menthol/minty aroma. A few ingredients that I recognized right off the bat are the menthol, jojoba, wintergreen and arnica. A full list of ingredients can be found on their website by clicking here.

Putting Battle Balm To The Test - Athlete Style

Brett first tried the Demon Strength after Jiu Jitsu training. His first experience was on his arms, primarily his forearms, and elbows. He was still feeling the effects of tennis elbow and the exacerbation after training. When he got home he was sore, and we thought this would be an opportune time to try the Battle Balm.

Starting with just a small dab on his fingers, it worked into the skin nicely. ( NOTE – for applying this product, please start small because you can always apply more. You might not start feeling the icy/heat effects the moment you put it on, but give it thirty seconds to a minute and I promise that you will feel it.) That icy/heat sensation stays for a bit, once it calms down, you will notice a change in the pain level you are experiencing, and not just being hidden by the icy/heat  sensation.

On another occasion, after Muay Thai, he had a few knots, aches and bruises. After taking a long hot shower, he applied the Battle Balm to his arms and thighs and massaged it in. Shortly thereafter, everything was noticeably feeling relatively normal again. He noticed that it also seemed to work its way into the skin better AFTER showering. Later on he discovered that application of the Battle Balm allowed for a more comfortable nights sleep.

The next morning he woke up more relaxed and less tense than he normally does after a hard night of class. If you decide to use this product before classes, make sure you apply it early so that your partner, or entire class, is not effected by the scent. It does holds its scent for some time.

Putting Battle Balm To The Test - Lifetime Gladiator Style

I, on the  other hand, have a lower back injury (primarily herniated disks and arthritis), and a wrist injury as well. And after using our Battle Balm, I can tell you that is it definitely not just for athletes!! My prior experience with any kind of topical application was with Biofreeze, which honestly was just a bit too much for my liking. Outside of that, pain pills and muscle relaxers – ugh!

After 12 yrs of back pain, I recently had branch nerve blocks (RF ablation) done on both the left and right sides of my back at L3,4 and 5. Now that I can't feel the nerve pain – I'm up and about and doing more than I have in years. Needless to say, the more I do, the more I find myself with new and different aches and pains; especially in the lower back muscles, between the shoulder blades and in the neck.

Battle Balm has been a remarkable pain reliever for these areas for me.

Final Thoughts

So, if you have ever over done it when performing yard work, working on the car, moving, or countless other physical activities that task the body and muscles in ways we don't normally experience in the day to day of our lives, then you know the aches and pains that I'm speaking of. Just a couple dabs of Battle Balm on the fingers and rub it in! A few more for a more intense feeling.

Surprisingly, it's not greasy! Touching the skin after application, I can tell something is there, but the skin is soft.  I found the stick more convenient to use for my wrist – just pass it over the wrist lightly (I went all the way around). Battle Balm quickly soothed the achy creaky feeling in my wrist. Sitting at the computer typing for long periods of time has become easier. I'll be sleeping pretty comfy tonight and wake up refreshed, not stiff as a board.

We will definitely be maintaining a healthy supply of Battle Balm in our house, gym bag, car and office from here on out. And we would recommend that you give it a try yourself. You will definitely notice an improvement and you may also find other uses that we have yet to discover.

Disclaimer

The purpose of this review is simply to provide the reader with some basic observations of our use of Battle Balm, and not to provide any warranty or guaranty of the product and how it will perform for you or other parties.

Use any medicinal product, including Battle Balm, wisely and at your own risk. Read and follow the directions. Don't get it in your eyes or on your genitals. And no matter how good it smells, do not ingest it.

Keep this and any similar products away from children, pets, the elderly and that crazy Uncle who comes over every Christmas to drink all the eggnog. In other words, don't leave it in the medicine cabinet where anyone and everyone has access to it. Do what I do, keep it under lock and key right next to your Smith & Wesson.

We also suggest that you do not leave it unattended at your gym. After 10 minutes of being dormant and in a strange place, apparently Battle Balm sprouts legs and walks off on its own to find help. And no one ever seems to see this happening, but it's the only explanation we can come up with for the numerous missing containers.

If in using this product your arm or leg falls off, your sex drive becomes uncontrollable, or you start growing hair in places otherwise thought impossible, don't come back to BJJ New Gear and blame us. You are an adult, take some responsibility for your choices and actions in life.

By blinking more than once while you read this review you have thereby waived all rights to sue or to hold BJJ New Gear or it's affiliated people responsible for anything related to this product with the exception to a shark attack that occurs in a salt-water swimming pool of not more than 5,000 gallons during the month of December in Massachusetts. If that happens, we got you covered. But other than that, you are an adult and responsible for your purchase decisions, knowing how to read and how follow directions. Oss.

Battle Balm - Interview

BSP Date: August 17, 2015

Q: What is the name of your brand(s)?  Battle Balm

Battle Balm.

Q: When & where was it founded, and where is it currently headquartered?

Battle Balm was founded in 2012 and is currently located in sunny San Diego, California.

Q: Who are the founders/current owners?

Dylan Jawahir, L.Ac., L.M.T. is the founder.

Q: Is there any significance behind the name of the brand or its logo?

Herbal balms have been made for centuries using native plants. Our balm is based upon the formulas used by the ancient Shaolin monks who had to physically train for combat in order to protect their temples and land. The word Battle in Battle Balm represents those martial roots.

Q: What was the driving force (or forces) behind the founding of the brand?

Battle Balm was a spinoff of my private acupuncture and Chinese medicine practice. I treated a lot of pain conditions and needed something to complement my treatments. Believe it or not, I couldn't find anything high quality, effective, and easy for my patients to use.

Q: What are your strengths / the strengths of your brand?

First of all, I love what I do. I've poured my heart and soul into Battle Balm, and I continue to do so.

Battle Balm believes in the same things I believe in: helping people, representing natural medicine, leaving a small carbon footprint, and giving back to society. We want to be more than just another brand selling "stuff."

Q: What was your first product produced (prototype or otherwise)?

Battle Balm Original Strength was our first product. It took almost 2 years of development and research before we perfected our formulation and production.

Q: In that first year or so, what were your first struggles in getting the brand off the ground?

Money was our biggest struggle from the start. That's the main reason why most companies fail within the first five years. We were no different. Luckily, we were only "in the red" for two years before we made a dime. If it weren't for a couple of angel investors that believed in our cause, we would have shut our doors.

Q: What would you consider to be your signature or keystone item(s) to date?

Our Extra Strength Battle Balm would be our keystone. It's the most versatile of the three strengths of Battle Balm and thus, has a broad range of use.

Q: What items do you also sell that people may not be aware of?

We sell an oral supplement called Fierce Qi. It's an herbal extract of premium ginseng and cordyceps, both adaptogens. Fierce Qi is a natural energy boost without the caffeine. A huge bonus is that the product helps stabilize blood sugar levels and optimizes metabolic function. A few high profile athletes are using it with good results.

Q: Do you have anything exciting coming up in the next few months or so that you can share with us?

These are secrets we can't share, but there are some products being beta tested as we speak!

Q: Geographically speaking, where is your primary customer base?

We do a lot of U.S. sales. Though, our overseas sales have been on the rise. We will be expanding our distributorship once we hit a certain point. It should open the floodgates to sales in our second biggest market, Europe.

Q: A common question/concern among our members is the issue of shipping. We have found that some brands will not ship worldwide or have carved out certain countries from their territory. So if you would, please explain your shipping policy, pricing and any geographic restrictions that you have with regard to the sale of your goods.

We sell to anyone with an address. Shipping outside of North America can be costly, but it's not outrageous. Once we get our overseas distributorship in place, it will be easier for our customers to pick up a tin or two.

Q: Do you have any sponsored athletes? If so, do you have specific criteria for selecting such athletes?

We have a few sponsored athletes. But, we are in the midst of changing our sponsorship around to allow more competitors to rep our brand in exchange for Battle Balm gear.

Q: Where do you get the inspiration from in designing new gear for your brand?

We try to see what a lot of other companies are doing with their brands both in and outside the BJJ space. Since our product can be used by just about everyone, we do our best to create designs that can please a wide audience.

Q: What differentiates you and your brand from other BJJ brands?

Battle Balm doesn't really have a lot of competition in the BJJ space. We understand the BJJ industry because we practice it. We support the BJJ community as they have supported us. There's a camaraderie in BJJ that we enjoy being a part of.

Q: What other brands are out there that you admire? And why?

There are a lot of companies that we support. But, we definitely lean more towards companies that are trying to do more and be more. What I mean is that we admire and respect companies that have good values, connect with the community and give back to society.

Q: Is your company direct sales only? Or do you have distributors?

Battle Balm does direct sales and we also sell our product in retail stores around the U.S.

Q: Do or have you participated in tournament booths or sponsorships of tournaments?

Yes, we do sponsor tournaments and have done a few booths. Off the top of my head, we've sponsored a Tap Cancer Out BJJ event, EBI, and Gracie Tournaments. We plan to do more in 2016.

Q: Any plans for future expansion?

Yes. We are expanding.

Q: What hobbies do you enjoy?

BJJ. Boxing. Kickboxing. Mountain biking. Building classic cars.

Q: Do you have any pets?

Yes. 2 dogs.

Q: Where did you grow up and attend school (University/College)?

I have an electrical engineering degree, a computer engineering degree, a business minor, a sales engineering minor, a massage therapy degree, an acupuncture degree and a high school diploma. I like to learn, I guess.

Q: Tell us a little about your background in martial arts/grappling.

I'm a white belt in BJJ. I have a black belt in Tae Kwon Do.

Quick Fire

These questions are designed to allow for short, one or two word answers. Oftentimes just yes or no, and from a personal perspective.

Q: Rash Guard – Short or long sleeve?

Long. It's not that much more fabric for quite a bit more protection.

Q: Preferred gi colorway?

White. I'm a traditionalist deep down.

Q: Rash under your gi?

No.

Q: Spats under your gi?

Hell no.

Q: Gi Pants – Rip Stop, Cotton Twill/Drill Cotton, or Cotton/Poly Blend?

I wear everything. But if I had a choice, it would be canvas all day long.

Q: Gi jacket weave?

Pearl weave for summer. Double for winter.

Q: Favorite submission?

Bow and arrow.

Q: Last stamp on your passport?

China.

Q: Beer or wine?

One in each hand.

Q: Tea or coffee?

Tea.

Q: Do you wash your belt or not?

Never.

Q: Regular knot or superlock knot in belt?

Regular.

Q: Isle or window seat?

Window.

Q: And finally…what social media do you participate in and what are those addresses?

Summary

Northern Lights, the Inaugural gi from Ground Fighter has hit the mats hard! Their first time out and they have accomplished what many others are still trying to do! Excellent fit and a comfortable roll is what you will get here!

This lightweight gi is perfect for the summer months....looks fantastic..cleans up well and is not overly made up. Did I mention it's IBJJF legal?

The company offers free shipping within the US, free return/exchange of unworn/unwashed items and the customer service is amazing!

Initial Observations

You will notice that Ground Fighter takes an extra step to send their Gi to the world. I was pleasantly surprised to see a white delivery box ordained with the Northern Lights logo on one side.

Upon opening the package and removing the gi in its vibrant bag, I was surprised with a bar of Iron Lion, One One 7 Soap. Per the site, this was included in the first 30 orders. It was a pleasant experience opening the box  to a scent not the norm of a newly delivered gi!  Shortly after, I also found the  Certificate of Authenticity tacked to the inside of the box – glad I looked! I think the delivery presentation was a step above. My only suggestion would be to have the Certificate inside the Gi bag, attached to the inside bag.

My next mission was to see how the gi measure up to their size chart. I received an A2 and it was right on point! The model  for my review is 5’10” and 165 lbs.

Inspection

Northern Lights is a super light, bright white gi with Purple and Green accents. The  contrast stitching, done in green, provides a subtle accent complementing this gi.  Weighing in at just about 3lbs, it’s almost like it isn’t even there.

Jacket

The jacket is one piece pearl weave adorned with minimal decor. (I think just the right amount). It has a comfortable EVA foam collar. On each arm is the Ground Fighter emblem embroidered in Purple.

On the back, is the embroidered Northern Lights logo – the triangular mountain that identifies this as NORTHERN LIGHTS.

The inside of the gi is dressed in a sublimated, moisture wicking shoulder and vent liner. The colors on the inside liner are as vivid as those in the real Northern Lights; Green, purple blue and a hint of fushia.

Woven taping  in the skirt says “keep your eyes on the stars and your feet on the ground Ground Fighter.” Could this be one of the BJJ Wonders of the World?

*note  - the person sampling the product has an fairly long reach, we had no problems with the arm length on the jacket.

The Pants

The pants are a 10oz drill pant with a pearl weave gusset. The green contrast stitching is consistent thru the pants also. I have to say, these are pretty nice! They seem to fit a bit better than most of the pants that I’ve come across. Not a tailored fit, but relaxed and hang very nicely. The high wear areas are reinforced with a bit of padding (additional material) in the knee area.  The proper fit of the pants does help prevent them from bunching up.

Final Comments

Direct out of the box, this Gi fit almost perfectly. The first wash – before use, was a cold water wash and air dry. After the first trip to they gym – and having a short turn around time it went for another  cold wash, and a light toss in the dryer....this gi was perfect!

Yes, I did do a tumble dry ex-low heat, (Note – heat not suggested unless you are looking to shrink in any capacity).  I know the dryer can be a no-no – but  it helps to give the perfect fit.

Ground Fighter has a care guide linked on their site:

http://groundfighter.net/blogs/news/34190785-size-care-and-shrinkage-guide-for-your-new-gi

Ultimately, we lost less than 1 cm in the arms and even less in the pants! We had an incident at the gym – and the gi had some blood on it....pretty good amount too.  I was shocked to see that it went in a cold water wash...and came out sparkling white! (no additive, no bleach alternative, nada) I think that the laundering of the gi is very important; not just for the aesthetics, but definitely for hygiene too!

The purpose of this review is simply to provide the reader with some basic observations of this gi, and not to provide any warranty or guaranty of the product and how it will fit you or the intended party, or how it will perform on the mat. That all depends if you purchase the correct size, know how to wash and dry it, and actually know some basic jiu jitsu.

Purchase this gi, hell purchase any gi at your own risk. The real risk comes into play when you put it on and hit the mat. And that, you do at your own risk.
