Throughout the history of BJJ New Gear we have been quietly active in donating gear to needy BJJers all over the world. Often it is for children in at-risk youth jiu jitsu programs, but we also have helped out individual members of our Group who are in need from time to time.
We do not keep track nor do we name names in public or to those who do not need to know. All donations are done in confidence and with respect. BJJ New Gear does not seek publicity from the recipient and all that we ask is that the recipient be respectful and return the gear or pass it on to someone else in need if it is not being used as originally intended.
Obtaining Gear
We obtain gear via donations from numerous Brand Owner Members of BJJ New Gear, as well as individuals who are fortunate to have more than they really need. Sometimes we hold onto it here, and other times we connect a willing donor with a deserving recipient and let the two of them work out the details. Either way, this is an ongoing cause that everyone involved with BJJ New Gear is passionate about.Recipients
Well this is always a tricky one. At one point we had a group entitled, "BJJ New Gear Donations" where only (allegedly) needy BJJers were members and we would attempt to find gear and distribute it. But that failed when our charity was taken advantage of and people who really were not needy were claiming to be so in order to get free gear. Sure, everyone wants free gear, but our objective is to get gear into the hands of the needy. The truly needy.Qualifying For A Donation
There is no special recipe or strict guidelines to qualify. And even if we came up with a list of criteria, it would likely exclude someone that is truly in need but on paper does not seem to qualify. So if you are truly needy, please contact BJJ New Gear (see below) and share your story with us. But please be advised before doing so, we will often seek confirmation from at least one other reliable source before deciding either way. It is sad to have to do this, but we have learned the hard way that while we trust we must also verify. That being said, here are but a few examples of situations where we have helped:
A BJJer's new kimonos were stolen after being delivered and left outside his door by the mailman. These were his first new kimonos in 15 years.
A BJJer father with young children in BJJ was financially crippled by medical expenses incurred in taking care of his ill wife. All his extra money went towards BJJ classes and kimonos for his children.
A very giving BJJ father with young children and a wife stricken with a debilitating illness was opening a new BJJ school and in need of used kimonos and gear for his prospective students, especially for the kids classes.
Two brothers in a third-world country were taking BJJ instruction for quite some time and did not have any gear whatsoever.
These are just a few examples and there are many more. Our priorities are as follows:
- Children,
- Widowed parents (or parents with critically ill spouses), and
- The handicapped.
